BELGRANO
BUENOS AIRES
Belgrano, named after Manuel Belgrano
(an argentine general creator of the Argentine flag) was the country´s
capital by 1880s. When La Plata City became the capital of the province
of Buenos Aires, Belgrano was annexed as a new neighborhood, as
well as Flores, another traditional barrio.
The Belgrano neighborhood has many different subdivisions.
Belgrano C , Belgrano R a residential
area where old mansions and skycrapers line together in the shady
cobblestone streets, and the lowlands called Bajo Belgrano
nearby the Rio de la Plata, where many football clubs, tennis, and
recreation areas are located.
Cabildo Ave. running south to north is the main commercial point
of the vicinity. Movie theaters, fashion boutiques, cafes, and miscellaneous
alongside this via, are always crowded. Línea “D”
subway, (“subte” for the porteños), follows the
trace of the avenue, and connects with many other areas such as
Palermo neighborhood and Plaza de Mayo in a very short time.
China Town is a very important commercial zone
within Belgrano C, mostly inhabited by Taiwanese families, nearby
the train station and the Barrancas de Belgrano.
Barrancas de Belgrano (hard of Belgrano C )area
is a splendid green park designed by the famous French landscaper
Charles Thays, who also designed Palermo woods. Based in a soft
hill, it is surrounded by sculptures, fountains and old trees, like
jacarandas, palos borrachos and other regional trees. This
promenade is one of the favorite of local families who gather there
especially during week-ends. It is very common to see children on
their rollers and bikes. Sunny days in Barrancas de Belgrano are
perfect for sunbathers since they can either listen to live music
and enjoy tango dancers, or simply stroll and relax. A popular craft
fair is held during Saturdays as well. Luxurious high-rise buildings
overlook the Barrancas de Belgrano creating a special environment.
Most important attractions within Belgrano area:
the round building church known as “La Redonda”,and
The Inmaculada Concepciòn de Belgrano built in a circular
plan where very famous people weddings were held.
Other important venues are The museum of Spanish Art by Enrique
Larreta in Juramento Ave. and Cuba Street, just in front of the
Museo Histórico (created by Sarmiento who was president of
the Argentine Republic by the 1880s). During summer evenings different
theatre performances are played in the “Patio Andaluz”
of the Museo Larreta.
Another interesting spot to be visited is the Rogelio Irurtia´s
House and Museum. Irurtia is one of the greatest sculptors in Argentina
whose master-piece “Canto al Trabajo” is admired in
the surroundings of San
Telmo neighborhood.
Belgrano neighborhood also houses its own University and many distinctive
schools, like French, German, British or Jewish institutions.
Belgrano R, is the most elegant subdivision of Belgrano.
Old British and German families settled in this area during last
century and gave a particular style to the zone. At present however,
many of those ancient residences belong to the “nouveaux riches”,
or have been replaced by high-rise apartments.
Getting to Belgrano is very easy. Numerous buses
(Barrancas de Belgrano is a large bus terminal and a train station
as well), the subway Line D, and the train Retiro-Tigre converge
into this vast vicinity.
Among the numerous neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, Belgrano has
its own character and style. It is a romantic, bucolic district
where people enjoy meeting for a drink at sunset in any of its sidewalk
cafes.
