Buenos Aires Tango

The tango has its origins in different influences such as Africans rhythm, candombes, havaneras, tango andaluz, etc.

In its beginnings, in 1880, it was danced by men. The women in the city brothels became a few years later as their first partenaires. The tango orchestra was first composed by guitars, violin and flute. It is in the early 1900’s that the bandoneon appears as the most distinctive instrument that identifies the tango.

The dance was considered obscene by the society of that time and tango was not accepted in upper classes. The lyrics were also vulgar and, generally, referred to prostitutes.

Nowadays in Buenos Aires, after much international success, the tango is a fashionable dance and its music is played again in the city porteña (from porteños, as the citizens of Buenos Aires are called)

We can say that there is a tango fever in Argentina that attires mainly tourists. People from different countries come to the capital of the tango to learn dancing, and to enjoy other activities related to it the end of February, an International Tango Championship takes place in Buenos Aires as well as many other regional festivals.

The tanguerias are frequented by young people, a phenomenon never seen during last years when tango seemed to be definitely out.

Festivals, museums, concerts and TV and radio shows are always on stage.

In the most authentic and oldest neighborhood of the city, San Telmo, especially during the weekends, tango fans can admire and even dance with professional dancers near the Plaza Dorrego, where antiques and curio are offered in the open air.

The tango is now considered as a glamorous, sexy, wild, elegant dance; even the high class accepts the tango as our national and most distinctive music.

We also celebrate the International day of the tango, which is on December 11. The activities of this special day are generally followed very enthusiastically by the tangueros (fans of tango).

Argentines are proud of tango and, specially, of their most important and unforgettable singer, Carlos Gardel, worldwide known and remembered as the one who made the tango be famous around the world.
