Volunteer Construction Project that’s Building Communities

The cement and building material producer, Holcim Argentina, has started an initiative that wants to give something back to impoverished Argentine communities. Argentina is a country that suffers from the problems of poverty, wealth distribution and underdevelopment. Companies are now using corporate responsibility programs to help bring about change and boost their PR profile. Holcim is launching the campaign in time with their 100 year anniversary.

The volunteer and social program that Homcim is launching is called Together for the Community (Juntos por las Comunidades). The program will involve 1500 corporate volunteers who will collaborate to construct homes for imporverished families. The volunteers will give over 12,000 hours of their time to help out some of the most needy communities in Argentina. Corporate responsibility campaigns are commonly used by large companies to improve their profile, as it’s a clever marketing tool Argentina is catching on to this form of philanthropic PR with major companies getting involved in sponsoring and organising large scale charity projects. Holcim is a multinational company that is set to. The official reason behind the Juntos por las Comunidades campaign is Holcim’s 100 year anniversary celebrations. The idea is that every year they have been in business will be given back through voluntary service from willing volunteers. Projects will be underway from August to December in areas across Argentina. These grass-roots projects will be in Córdoba, Jujuy, Mendoza, Santa Fe, Campana, Zárate and the San Martin district of Buenos Aires.

There are huge disparities in Argentina with the minority of the population owning the majority of Argentina’s wealth, whilst the majority of Argentines struggle with poverty, malnutrition and lack of safe housing. In Buenos Aires city these problems may not seem so apparent but in the rest of the country the reality is very different. The Homcim project follows in the steps of other successful projects such as ‘Un techo para mi país,’ (translates as: a roof for my country) a scheme that uses donated materials, funding and volunteers to construct communities in areas that were previously unstable slum areas. ‘Un techo’ is now present in several Latin American countries such as Peru, Chile and Argentina. Corporate companies have been sponsoring and supporting the scheme; however, the Homcim program is one that is organised by the company itself.

The volunteers that participate in the Together for the Community (Juntos por las Comunidades) will get the chance to not only construct houses but also contribute to the logistical and organisational aspects of the project. It makes sense for a construction material company like Homcim give something back to the communities that could not usually afford their products. Hopefully more corporations will follow suit.
