Palermo Sensitive Buenos Aires

A 2008 study revealed an interesting fact about Argentina: it has the highest number of psychologists per head in the world. According to the study, there are 789 psycholgists per 100,000 citizens in Buenos Aires. The Argentine capital city, Buenos Aires, is apparently brimming with shrinks and they are apparently most commonly found in the sub-neighbourhood of the city that is popularly known as ‘Palermo Sensible’ (in English, Palermo Sensitive). Palermo Sensible is a charming residential neighbourhood of Buenos Aires that is characterised by its tree-lined streets and handy proximity to the city centre and the main avenues. This area of Palermo – the largest in the city – is popular with professionals, students and tourists. It is also a popular choice of location for private therapists and psychologists’ clinics.

The area is so famous for the prevalence of psychologists that it has been named Villa Freud and also Palermo Sensitive. This sub-neighbourhood can be found along Honduras Street between the main avenues Coronal Diaz and Scalabrini Ortiz. Honduras Street is a narrow, residential road that is lined with trees and has been chosen as the site for the construction of some impressive luxury high-rises in recent years. Nevertheless, developers have attempted to maintain the areas pleasant nature. This sought-after area is located close to the wide avenues of Coronal Diaz and Scalabrini Ortiz where residents can enjoy a wealth of facilities, restaurants and shops.

Unfortunately, some historic houses in this area of Buenos Aires have been demolished to make way for these high-rise structures. These stylish, old houses were what defined the neighbour and made it so ‘sensitive’ but slack urban planning regulations have failed to protect the area’s heritage and historic identity. An example of the type property being constructed on foundations of historic buildings is the Fideiscomiso Honduras development. This project is currently under construction and consists of a four-floor tower plus terrace floor. The building will contain three units per floor including five duplex; one and two bedroom apartments and two studio apartments. Architect Daniel Bonini from the BF+U Firm have given this project an attention-grabbing and modern design that will not fit with the local areas ‘sensitive’ nature. However, these types of properties are in demand with the majority of buyers coming from rural Argentina who are looking to invest in a property with rental potential. Despite the fact that some new developments are altering the face of Palermo Sensible in Buenos Aires there are still areas along Honduras Street that maintain the neighbourhood feel and it’s still a great choice if you want to set up a psychology clinic.
